About 10 flower pots had been damaged in the last four weeks, said preschool manager Heidi De Mouilpied, who believed that vandalism was to blame.

‘I feel sad for the children because they take a lot of time to look after them. It’s a shame,' she said.

On Sunday, two plastic pots had been tipped over and three heavier ceramic ones had been smashed.

After clearing them up, she was disappointed to find a further pot had been broken just one day later.

‘What has happened to Guernsey over the last couple of years – it never used to be like this,’ she added.

The children had enjoyed growing the plants and regularly watered them, so they had asked what had happened to the pots.

‘They have noticed,’ Ms De Mouilpied said.

‘We just said we will plant some more.’

Some islanders had been in contact and said they were happy to bring some pots to the preschool, and some security features such as a motion sensor doorbell had been considered.

It was hoped the installation of cameras would not be necessary.

‘It’s a big expense to get cameras for some plant pots.’
