FIVE students from Les Voies School had a rare opportunity to put their abseiling skills to the test at St Saviour’s Reservoir.

The culmination of several different outdoor activities organised by the school saw them abseil down the dam to the valley below, helped by representatives of the Climb charity.

Outdoor education teacher David Merris said the group had already had a go at rock climbing and paddle boarding.

‘They’ve had a good couple of months doing as many outdoor activities as they can,’ he said.

Prior to the big drop at the reservoir they had abseiled down the large rock face at Le Guet.

Climb provides climbing activities to those who would not otherwise have access to it, and the charity’s Chris Harvey and Nicky Pledger made sure the boys were strapped up properly and guided them down the dam face. With two hours to fill and only five students, each one had multiple attempts, with some choosing to try going down face first once or twice.

It was a special day in more ways than one for two students who were enjoying their last official day at school, with only a couple of exams left to take.

‘We’ve also been powerboating,’ said Che Le Prevost, 15.

‘I’ve probably enjoyed the climbing most.’

He will be taking on a plumbing apprenticeship, he said.

Mark Rivera, 16, said he had enjoyed abseiling front-first down the dam.

‘It’s not too hard. Getting over the edge is the hardest part.’
