HOT weather is leading to more call outs than usual for Guernsey’s lifeboat during June.

As of yesterday, the RNLI had responded to three incidents this week and a total of 15 since March.

The crew was called out on Thursday to a man who had broken his ankle on Herm’s Belvoir Hill. The Flying Christine III was deployed, arriving at 2.15pm, but at low tide was unable to get close to the scene.

Paramedics worked with the inshore lifeboat crew to transfer the man onto the marine ambulance, which was moored a short distance away, before being taken to hospital in Guernsey.

‘It was a very smooth operation to extricate the patient from a difficult location and with the low tides,’ said paramedic team leader Steve Torode.

‘The Herm staff and lifeboat crews were very helpful and we all worked well together to provide the best care for the patient.’

Lifeboat operations manager Jason Hobbs said while year-on-year it was seeing the usual number of call-outs, this month was higher than normal.

‘We are up this month which doesn’t come as a surprise with the weather we are having.’

He said it was important to highlight the precautions that need to be taken by boaters to avoid issues at sea.

‘It’s important to look at the maintenance of your boat – that is possibly the highest element,’ said Mr Hobbs.

. The Spirit of Guernsey will be alongside the slip opposite the Town Church today from 9.30 to 11.30am for people to visit in support of the annual flag day.

There will also be a stall selling RNLI souvenirs outside the church.
