Rising culinary star is Apprentice of The Year
CULINARY student Jack Collenette has been named the College of Further Education’s Apprentice of The Year 2022.
The 22-year-old was selected by the judges for his positive attitude, impeccable work ethic, and outstanding college grades.
He is just about to finish his college course in culinary skills, and has worked at the Best Western Moores Hotel for almost seven years.
Moores Hotel HR manager Davina Mansell said: ‘Jack has overcome a number of obstacles in the early stages of his career.
‘He is totally dedicated to his craft and constantly strives to improve all aspects of his culinary skills.
‘He is a real team player – always the first to assist and support his colleagues.
‘Jack is a great asset to the hotel and has a wonderful career in the hospitality industry ahead of him.’
Mr Collenette’s love of cooking started at a young age, baking with his nan. He most enjoys making desserts – in particular, sticky toffee pudding.
He has amassed almost 3,000 followers on Instagram, @jackcollenettefood, where he posts pictures of his culinary creations.
‘My love of being in a kitchen started early, and the joy of making people happy with good food stayed with me and led me in to the hospitality industry,’ said Mr Collenette.
‘I am absolutely thrilled to win Apprentice of The Year and would like to congratulate all the other amazing nominees.
‘I was a bit shocked when they said my name, but so happy. I had a big smile on my face.
‘I must also say a huge thank you to my colleagues and the team at Moores who have supported and guided me.
‘I love it here, it is like a massive family.’
In the long term, Mr Collenette wants to run his own kitchen one day.
He plans to stay on-island, where he grew up, and work his way up the culinary ladder.
Education liaison for the Guernsey Hospitality Association, Gareth Byrne, said: ‘What an outstanding achievement for Jack. We wish him many congratulations for being awarded Apprentice of the Year.
‘It’s a privilege for Jack to be recognised above other industries’ apprentices and also excellent for the hospitality sector as a whole.’
A new award was also introduced this year, given to an apprentice ‘for the most distance travelled’ – such as overcoming illness, or other such obstacles.
This was awarded to Charlene Nelson, a retail skills apprentice working at the Channel Island Cooperative Society.
All awards were presented by Education, Sport & Culture vice president Bob Murray.
College principal Louise Misselke said: ‘The calibre of nominees was such that selecting a winner was extremely difficult.
‘Jack really does go above and beyond and is the epitome of a fantastic apprentice. Congratulations to all of our apprentices who have been recognised for their hard work and achievements this year.’
