Saumarez Park pavilion damaged by fire

THE new fishing pavilion at Saumarez Park has been damaged by fire, only nine months after its renovation.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a fire that was caused to the new fishing pavilion on the pond at Saumarez Park. Part of the flooring was damaged and now needs replacing – it is closed to the public for the time being. (Pictures by Sidney Prosser, 30976994)

The incident took place between 10pm on Saturday and Monday morning.

A part of the wooden flooring of the pavilion was damaged and now needs to be replaced so that it is safe for the public to use, so the site has been closed.

This damage comes after the pavilion was restored in September 2021 by volunteers.

The fire damage was reported on Monday and the Police are now conducting enquiries in the area.

Anyone, witnesses or people with information regarding what happened, is being asked to come forwards and speak to officers.

Crimestoppers is offering a £500 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and charge of the culprits.
