Charity walk to help Nairobi school library
ABOUT 20 people took part in a charity walk through the lanes of Torteval to raise money to buy books for deprived children in the biggest slum in east Africa.
Organised by the Art of Living Guernsey, funds will go towards a fourth schools library in Kibera – a division of the Nairobi area.
One person taking part was Veronicah Faris, who has worked at Moore’s Hotel for three months and who had sponsorship from her employer.
‘Having grown up in Kenya, I loved reading when I was young, so I realise the impact it will have on these kids,’ she said.
‘Every child has a right to an education.’
Miss Faris learned of the event through AoL events coordinator Andrew Pouteaux.
‘I would like to thank Andrew and his team, and everybody else involved, for thinking about Kenya,’ she said.
‘Guernsey people are warm and very loving and they have made this a home from home for me.’
Another walker, Cathy Wanyoike, helps to support the Kenyan network in Guernsey.
‘Anything to do with Kenya means something to me,’ she said.
‘The more that people can read, the better their education and the better their education, the better people will become.’
Mr Pouteaux said: ‘Art of Living is about making a better life. When you live a better life you see other people, which is where I come in.’
Founded in 1982 by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Bangalore, India, the Art of Living is a non-profit, educational, humanitarian organisation with a wide range of social, cultural and spiritual activities. It is the largest volunteer-based network in the world.
