Temperature record could fall
TODAY could be the hottest day in the island’s recorded weather history, according to the forecast.
Europe is in the grips of a heatwave and today the Jersey Met Office is forecasting a maximum temperature of 35C for Guernsey.
Guernsey’s record temperature for July is 32.6C, set in 2016. And the hottest temperature ever for the island was set in August 2003, at 34.3C.
Yesterday the temperatures were already edging close to the July record, topping 29C during the afternoon.
By 9am yesterday it was already nearly 22C and islanders spent the day trying to keep cool.
Among the beach-goers at Cobo were Tim Wilson, with his partner, Alex, and children Michael, 2, and Rosie, 1.
‘We were going to go to the Cup and Saucer, but that was rammed – lots of cars,’ Mr Wilson said, who was paddling with Michael.
‘So we came here and the children just love it.’
With the weather so hot, they were only going to spend a short time on the beach before going home to seek shade.
Adam Tarry decided to go snorkelling with his daughter Pearl, 9.
‘We saw three fish and a purple jellyfish,’ said Pearl.
Despite the weather being so hot, the water was still cold, she said.
Rock pooling was also a popular activity, with six-year-old Eoghan McCarthy searching for fish with his net.
His aunt, Becky Avery, said they were having a good time.
‘It’s just a gorgeous day and he has been adventuring all morning,’ she said.
Jersey is forecast to be even hotter than Guernsey today, with a maximum temperature today of 38C.
There has still been no measurable rainfall so far this month, but that could change in the coming days.
Jersey Met Office is forecasting that it is likely there will be showers, which will possibly be thundery, in the morning and afternoon tomorrow, as well as a chance of some showers on Wednesday morning.
Temperatures also set to slip tomorrow down to 28C.
