Alderney Week promises The Greatest Show
ALDERNEY Week is back next week after last year’s was cancelled for the first time since 1948 due to the number of Covid cases.
The organisers have made a final appeal for volunteer help for the week-long event.
Wayne and Vicky Chandler are spearheading the new-look Alderney Week organising team, and are preparing to host more than 70 different events during the course of the festival.
‘So far our preparation has been going pretty well, it is all starting to come together now,’ said Mr Chandler.
‘We are still looking for volunteers, though, as normally a lot of the holiday home owners come and do help out with the event, but they are not here yet.’
The theme for the 2022 edition is The Greatest Show, which was selected in honour of the late Ray Parkin.
Mr Parkin was 'instrumental in making Alderney Week the biggest annual community festival in the Channel Islands,’ as described by the event organisers.
‘A lot of the week will be the same as normal however there have been a few tweaks,' said Mr Chandler.
We are going to host a party on the beach with live music, which should be really fun.'
Events such as the junior talent show, the daft raft race, the gala spectacular and the festival of colour will be once again taking place, while the popular Circus Pazaz is making its return to the festival.
The Rock the Rock festival will take place on Saturday 30 July before the Victoria Street market the following day.
Alderney Week will start officially on Monday 1 August with cavalcade day, as is traditional.
Mrs Chandler thanked local sponsors who have already pledged their financial support and for the donations received.
‘This year we are faced with ever-increasing costs of materials, services, fireworks, marquee and equipment hire, travel and accommodation for performing artists and crew, and we hope more sponsors will come forward to support us.
‘However we are determined to bring you "The Greatest Show".’
