Youngsters show creative talent in photography competition
THE creativity of young islanders was put to the test in the Rotary Young Photographer Competition, which was open to people aged 10-17.
Judges were focusing on what was being communicated to the viewer and how colour and light had been captured.
‘With activities for youths, the opportunities are immense as they gain new skills and confidence,’ said Rotary youth opportunities conveyor Neil Houston.
‘They are working for themselves, which gives them a sense of individualism to come forward in thinking.’
He said judges were also looking at the depth of the work and how creative and imaginative the entrant had been.
‘Thinking outside the box is what photography is all about. This was to encourage them to jump on board and look at what surrounds them here on the island – the potential for photography is immense.’
Within the junior, intermediate and senior categories, photographs included streams, pets and the sea.
‘There was a considerable entry,’ Mr Houston said.
‘The children all said what a good experience it was.’
With the use of mobile phones making photography very accessible, Mr Houston said pictures weren’t always appreciated as much as they used to be.
‘We have lost something nostalgically but we have to move with the times and the technological advancements are amazing.’
Competition entrant Derick van Zutphen, 11, who won the junior category, had taken his photograph with his sister.
‘I took a picture of a stream and plants,’ he said. ‘My sister knew about the competition so I did it because she did.’
