Swim for Lynn was organised in memory of Lynn Brookfield – a keen swimmer who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 64 in 2017.

Her niece, Kirsty Dempster, 24, helped to organise the swim, which saw 30-40 people taking part.

Miss Dempster said this was the first time they had held a memorial swim.

‘She loved swimming,’ she said.

‘She used to swim at La Vallette every day, as well as at Cobo. We miss her so much. So it is really nice to do something like this to keep her memory alive.’

The swimmers included several family members, including Lynn’s sisters Karin Mitchell and Sarah Dempster, nieces Anna Mitchell and Abigail Dempster and nephew Peter Mitchell.

There were also friends and swim buddies.

Abigail Dempster, 22, said it was great to take part.

‘This is a great way to honour Auntie Lynn,’ she said.

‘She would have liked this. It has brought together so many people special to her.’

The swimmers began at 9am and had aimed to swim the distance from England to France by the end at 4.30pm. But they more than doubled that, with 2,700 lengths. The money raised from the swim will go to the Smile for Georgie Foundation and Guernsey Disability Swimming.

The charities were chosen because Lynn used to babysit for one of the GDS members, and she used to swim with Georgie’s mum, Jenny Le Prevost. That led to the family thinking Lynn would have approved of the two charities and their good work.

Miss Dempster said they wished to thank Aztec for supporting the event.
