Use us for your family history – new archivist
A NEW archivist has taken over at Island Archives, and is looking forward to continuing development of the service to meet public needs.
Vikki Hart joined Island Archives in April 2011, and in the past 11 years has worked as an archive assistant and then in a senior role, before now leading the service.
‘I’ve learnt a lot during my time so far but in my new role I’m looking forward to exploring some of the other aspects of the service,’ she said.
‘I’m really excited to be taking over at a time of new developments and to meet the needs of the archive users during changing times.’
Mrs Hart initially developed an interest in local history while working for the National Trust of Guernsey Folk and Costume Museum during her time at school and university.
Within her new role she intends to focus on improving public access to the archives by developing an online catalogue so that members of the public can search the collections from home.
‘Our Occupation records are most frequently accessed as it is such a big area of interest for people,’ she said.
‘The Occupation range is large as well, from personal letters and diaries to official records from the Occupation Controlling Committee.’
Helen Glencross, the head of Heritage Services, said that she was looking forward to working with Mrs Hart to develop the service and make it more accessible.
‘Stepping into the role after nearly three decades of service from Dr Darryl Ogier, Vikki brings 11 years of experience working with local archives and up-to-date knowledge of the most recent developments in archival practice.’
As a States-run service, Island Archives continues to keep modern records of life in Guernsey.
Mrs Hart said that since the launch of TV shows such as Do You Know Who You Are?, islanders have become more interested in their family history, and she said Island Archives can be really helpful in the secondary stages of family history research.
She has encouraged islanders to get in touch with the service to see how they can help with research.
