The organisation currently helps more than 200,000 people across the UK, and is hoping to increase this to 500,000 by next year – including in Guernsey.

‘We work with people of all ages who have different levels of sight loss and we cater to their needs, but are most well known for our guide dogs,’ said volunteer coordinator for the South West, Patrycja Janecka.

‘As we look to increase the number of individuals we can help, we are looking to set up a fundraising group in Guernsey to signpost information on where they can receive assistance.

‘There isn’t a huge amount of people in Guernsey who have guide dogs and so we hope to raise awareness for the organisation and how we can help islanders who may benefit from it.’

A fundraising leader role is available to head the Guernsey group, as well as other fundraising roles.

Ms Janecka said that there were a couple of fundraising volunteers already in the island, but the new position would reinforce and lead the group.

‘The lead role will consist of organising events and activities, and other roles could involve distributing and checking in on donation boxes,’ she said

‘All things that will encourage individuals to check out whether or not they could benefit from the service.’

The organisation is always welcoming new volunteers and vacant local roles can be found by searching a postcode on www.guidedogs.org.uk.
