The three parts of the day – the States meeting and Royal Court gathering at St James and the public proclamation at the Crown Pier – all went smoothly, thanks to a large team working behind the scenes.

While preparations for the death of the Queen have been taking place in private for years, the logistics of getting everything in place in just two days was still a big undertaking.

Lieutenant General Cripwell said it had been a wonderful day.

‘A great deal of hard work had been done by many people and that was very evident in the way in which the day passed,’ he said.

‘There was some fundamental constitutional business to be conducted, but it was also important for the people of Guernsey to hear for themselves the proclamation read out by the HM Sheriff and to have the opportunity to express their regard and respect for His Majesty.

‘There was a wonderful turnout and the warmth of everyone involved was very clear to me. It really was a day to remember and one I hope will be a memory for many years to come for everyone who was there.’
