A jovial speech was given by Lt-Governor Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell, recalling a number of interactions the Queen had with islanders, many of which provoked laughter from the otherwise sombre attendants.

‘She visited the island six times and I know she never stopped thinking about us,’ said Lieutenant General Cripwell.

‘As she said herself, grief is the price we pay for love.’

Representatives of five organisations associated with the Queen led a series of prayers, including from the Girlguiding Association, St John Ambulance and the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society.

‘It was an honour to speak – I wouldn’t have not accepted the opportunity for the world,’ said Bailiwick of Guernsey Girlguiding commissioner Collette Merrien.

Addresses were also given by the Rev. Peter Graysmith, chief minister Peter Ferbrache and Dean of Guernsey the Very Rev. Tim Barker.
