Latvians in Guernsey can vote in country’s election
LATVIANS living in Guernsey will have a chance to cast a vote in their national elections on Saturday.
The Latvian parliamentary election for the 14th Saeima will see 100 members of parliament elected for the next four years.
‘There are nine polling stations across the UK and Guernsey has one of them,’ said St Peter Port douzenier Evita Bormane, who is originally from Latvia.
‘It is an opportunity for the Latvian community to come together and still be involved in the country.’
The parliamentary election takes place every four years, and this will be the fifth time that there has been a polling station in Guernsey.
Guernsey’s Latvian population has fallen in recent years, but it is estimated there are still roughly 1,500 in the island.
‘There are less here than before, there used to be about 5,000 Latvians in Guernsey, but people have left because of Brexit and the pandemic,’ said Ms Bormane.
‘The parliamentary election will be nice for other nationalities to see that they can still be involved with things back in their homeland.’
All citizens of the Republic of Latvia over the age of 18 have the right to cast a vote.
. The Guernsey polling station is will be open between 7am and 8pm at the St Peter Port Constables’ Office, Lefebvre Street, St Peter Port.
