The match took place between Leeds United XI and Manzur XI at the Corbet Field, with all players having played football with Mr Smale at some point.

‘The match is played in memory of my late brother Dan, who passed away from bowel cancer at the age of 36 in 2019,’ said Toby Smale.

‘Anyone who knew Dan would have known that his main love in life was Leeds United.

‘After he passed away we knew we had to do something to honour his memory and help raise money towards a charity that helps local individuals suffering from bowel cancer, and this annual football match seems to be the perfect event to achieve both.’

In the past three years, the charity match has raised more than £8,000, with all proceeds going to Bowel Cancer Guernsey.

The initial fundraising goal for the event this year was £2,000, but the team surpassed this target very quickly and some donations are still being received.

‘The game took place between a Leeds United Select XI and Manzur FC and in my opinion this was the best one yet,’ said Toby.

‘Not only did we have great weather, in comparison to the previous two years, but the number of people who turned out and the donations received was amazing.

‘It was a hard-fought game and Manzur scored with about 4/5 minutes to go making it 2-1 to them, and that’s how it finished.’

The charity match was held in late September and was followed by screenings of the Premier League matches and a barbecue and meat draw held in the club house.
