The Inner Wheel was set up 24 years after the main club and involves the wives and partners of Rotary members.

President Gill Girard said it had come up with the idea of giving a cherry tree to tie in with the Japanese pavilion near the park’s pond.

‘It seemed appropriate, given the Japanese pavilion,’ she said.

The tree was provided by Paulo’s Plant Centre and the hole dug for the group by States Works.

Mrs Girard was joined by Rotary Guernsey president Brian Acton for the main part of the planting ceremony after which several of the members who had gathered to watch helped to fill in the hole, including the president of Rotary Jersey, who was visiting.

The tree was planted in an open patch just along the path from the pavilion and Mrs Girard hoped other groups would follow the example and plant more cherry trees nearby. ‘It would be lovely to have an avenue,’ she said.

Mr Acton said that this weekend was the 100th anniversary of Guernsey Rotary’s first meeting, while next year will see the centenary of it being granted a charter by the UK club.

He thanked the Inner Wheel for its gift.

‘This tree will be a lasting legacy,’ he said, and hoped that it would lead to the further enhancement of the area.
