As with many areas of health care provision, many staff in the domiciliary sector will hold part-time roles, with some working just a few hours a week.

‘A morning or an afternoon would be very helpful because we have a part-time team that make up this area,’ said HSC president Al Brouard.

‘Having the right attitude is the main thing and many people out there already have a lot of experience of caring for their own loved ones.’

Director of operations Dermot Mullin said anyone who was ‘caring in their nature’ would be given any training they needed in order to become part of the team.

‘Previous experience isn’t necessary,’ he said.

‘We obviously have an interview process to check that people have the right values and beliefs for working in this environment but as part of our recruitment strategy, there’s a formal induction process and then a lot of staff go on to do what’s known as a care certificate.

‘So it’s kind of the first step on a number of training pathways they can get on to.’

This meant that some staff would go on to become associate practitioners, which is part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council register, and then go in to nurse training, while others might opt for a social care route, becoming social work assistants and then social workers.

‘Their previous experience, whilst welcomed, is not necessary,’ Mr Mullin said.

Anyone interested in care work is urged to email lynda.potter@gov.gg or visit the HSC website or Facebook page.

HSC has reassured service users that they and their families ‘will not be harmed by’ the decision to cut services in domiciliary care by 25%.

However, if anybody has concerns about the care provided, they are asked to call the Customer Care Team on 220000.
