Livelier school lunchtimes
STUDENTS at St Sampson’s High school are able to enjoy livelier lunchtimes with the new ‘glow up’ of its canteen.
The idea came from school council discussions about upgrading their canteen into a more enjoyable space to eat and socialise and was supported by staff at the school.
Following discussions, a school-wide vote on the theme for the design took place and street art was declared winner.
The students then created images to be sent to local artist India Silvester, who turned these into illustrations to be displayed around the canteen.
‘I was immediately drawn to this project as an ex-pupil of St Sampson’s High School. I remembered how much I used my canteen area and how important it was for me socially. I truly would’ve loved a project like this when I was there,’ said Ms Silvester.
Norman Piette and Dowding signs also gave a helping hand, with Norman Piette funding materials for the hatch decorations and Dowding Signs turning the illustrations into window vinyls.
Another aspect of the revitalised canteen is promoting healthy eating through a partnership with the Health Improvement Commission to give students access to healthy and tasty food.
‘We have previously trialled different meal ideas with the students and this project goes further, to enhance their environment.
‘We are pleased to have worked with them to transform both the environment and menu,’ said Eat Well Lead at the Health Improvement Commission Alex Kosmas.
The project has received a lot of positive feedback, with a survey showing that 74% of pupils prefer the canteen to what it was before.
‘It was great to come back to school and see the artwork – it makes the canteen brighter and more welcoming,’ said Year 8 pupil and student council member Alana Hockey.
