Angela Horsepool lost the ring on Tuesday morning while swimming.

‘I actually saw it come off, so I knew roughly where in the pool it was,’ she said.

‘I tried diving down but it was too dark. I could see the bottom but not the ring. People have looked all week but couldn’t find it.

‘Then a friend mentioned she knew some divers.’

Local diving enthusiasts Mat and Sally Le Maitre came to the rescue on Saturday morning after a post went out asking for help on the Swim All Seasons Facebook page.

‘Sally offered our services straight away, but made it clear that it would be very unlikely we’d find it,’ said Mr Le Maitre.

‘That morning we embarked on a search. After 25 minutes of searching, we were thinking – just a few more minutes and then we’ll have to give up. Suddenly I saw a circular band glistening on the bottom of the pool amongst sand, seaweed and small rocks. We couldn’t believe it, but we were so happy to be able reunite the ring with its owner.’

The ring had been at the bottom of the tidal pool for four days with fresh seawater coming to the pool twice a day.

Sally Le Maitre, who searched alongside her husband, said that in different conditions they would have had no hope of recovering the ring.

‘Luckily that week it was neap tides not springs. If we had left it any longer we never would have found it.’

Mrs Horsepool and her husband were there to see the ring recovered.

‘Mat actually came up with the ring on his finger,’ said Mrs Horsepool.

‘There was quite a few people watching, and everyone cheered.’

Mrs Horsepool has been married for 38 years and the ring held obvious sentimental value.

‘I never thought they would find it. I’m very grateful to them and so is my husband as now he doesn’t have to buy me a new one.’
