Not many people upstage Santa Claus, but 91-year-old Molly Bihet probably did when she put in a personal appearance at the Christmas fair organised by her church, St John’s, to sign and sell copies of her Occupation books. (Picture by Luke Le Prevost, 31532596)

Molly Bihet, who is 91, had four of her most popular books on sale, including Occupation Life: Real Lives on German Occupied Guernsey.

As a member of the church, Mrs Bihet was keen to get involved with its annual festive event.

‘I asked if they might be interested in me coming down and they said yes – I know the fair is for the children really.

‘But I enjoy writing, and there is so much to write about when it comes to the war,’ she said.

She was only nine when the Nazis arrived in Guernsey and her parents were faced with the decision of whether to send their children to England or keep them on-island.

The family ended up remaining in Guernsey, and Mrs Bihet wrote her first book, A Child’s War, in 1985, which is described as a tribute to mothers who dealt with the worry and frustration of bringing up children during five years of the German Occupation in Guernsey.

Churchwarden Annette Stewart said she was grateful that Mrs Bihet had offered to sell her books.

‘It’s always a privilege when someone who has so many stories offers up their time.’

Mrs Bihet was not the only special guest, as Santa Claus made an appearance to open the event formally, before heading to his grotto.
