Currently head of juniors at Walhampton Preparatory School, Mary Lawson graduated from Solent University with a first-class degree in Graphic Design and Photography, which she used to build her career in media and design, winning a BAFTA for her work in online media.

‘She has real expertise in innovating and developing curriculum and has chosen to join us at this exciting moment when the college is asking big questions about how to equip our students for the future,’ said college principal Daniele Harford-Fox.

Starting her teaching career at Breakmore Primary School, she moved to Walhampton two years later to begin her 15-year journey with the school.

Joining Mrs Lawson is her husband, Sandy, who will bring his experience to the sports department.

He graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BSc in Physical Education and Youth Sport and holds several coaching positions in Hampshire, as well as being a coach for England Hockey.

The two will also be joined by their 10-year-old twin daughters, Elvie and Red, who will both join Melrose in September.

‘From my first visit to the school, I was touched by the incredibly warm and friendly welcome that I received,’ said Mrs Lawson.

‘I am excited by the potential for Melrose’s continued development, grounded in its existing ethos and long history,’ said Mrs Lawson.

‘I am determined to develop the curriculum to build on the outstanding broad education Melrose already offers to empower young women to reach their full potential in the 21st century.

‘As a family, we feel honoured to be at the centre of the school’s exciting future.’

n Rosie de La Fosse will continue as acting head teacher until the end of the academic year.
