‘Islanders understand the importance of tree planting for Guernsey,’ said GTFL committee member Colin Dodd.

‘We want to encourage as many people as possible on-island to buy a tree as a gift this year – they make a wonderful living present as a gift.’

Native elm, ash, and chestnut trees have been hit by disease recently, he said, and many species are under threat due to development.

‘We have lost so many trees, trees are constantly under threat from imported disease.

‘Not only is it important to replace and add to existing stock, but these should be native trees, as they are far more effective in adding to our local biodiversity.

‘Islanders should take this into consideration and ask the experts at Guernsey Gardens for advice on the best trees to buy, thinking about where they will be planted and the surrounding habitat.’

As part of the annual initiative, Guernsey Gardens is offering a 25% discount on all native trees purchased this month when customers make reference to the campaign.

‘Native trees support so much of our wildlife,’ Mr Dodd added.

‘Give a Tree for Christmas’ is not just an original gift idea, but it also helps our environment and the replenishment of our island tree stocks.’
