Shoppers grab early deals as Town retailers launch sales
SHOPPERS jumped at the chance to grab a bargain in Town yesterday as many shops launched their sales.
While some retailers had chosen to put the classic red discount stickers out on Boxing Day, others wanted to give their staff the extra day off.
Creasey’s and Next bags seemed to dominate the High Street, but there were also a number of other independent shops that were offering good bargains.
Land of Green Ginger’s up-to 50% sale started the day after Christmas, but only for select customers.
‘It has been quite busy – we do a special sale for our loyalty members,’ said manager Ash Baigent.
There are about 4,000 members who would have had the opportunity to grab an early deal.
‘You just sign up then you get a slight advantage over other customers,’ said Mr Baigent.
The Outlet, which offers designer and luxury brands at a discounted rate, was having a sale for a slightly different reason.
‘It’s our last day today,’ said owner Matt Grange.
Since opening three years ago, he said the shop had been a success, but it was now time to move on to a
job he has accepted in London.
‘It’s all been a bit last minute. It’s been great, it’s been a different three years with Covid, but everyone has been really supportive. It’s not that the business isn’t doing well, but when it is your own business it is all-encompassing and
you can’t do two things at once.’
Despite the imminent closure, there had still been good numbers of people coming through the door on Boxing Day and yesterday.
This year was the first Christmas season for Hope Store – located in the old Beghins shop on the High Street – since opening nine months ago.
It had taken a different, more sustainable approach to sales.
‘We’re having a bonanza instead of a sale,’ said co-manager Roy Herring.
‘That is where we find treasure, so people can come in and find themselves some treasure.’
Customers are limited to buying two items per person, but there is a 10% discount on at the moment.
‘We didn’t want to do a sale because we are an ethical brand. To some customers it is a breath of fresh air,’ said co-manager Maria Marsh.
Many of the UK retailers located in Town opened their doors early, including Boots, WHSmith and Sports Direct, where shoppers seemed to be flocking in the morning.
