Decent hauls at first ormering tide of the year

DESPITE the wet and windy weather, ormer enthusiasts followed the tide for the first ormering opportunity of the year yesterday lunchtime.

At ormering hotspot Lihou Island, more than 50 islanders and a dog flipped over rocks to find their freshly-caught dinner.

Low tide hit at 12.30pm, but fishermen were seen from 10am onwards walking out with the tide for first access to the shellfish of the year.

Andrew Benstead caught 16 ormers in just half-an-hour.

‘These were found when I was only in up to my knees,’ he said.

‘I’ve seen people go as deep at their necks along the causeway.’

Mr Benstead said that if he collected a lot he would fry them to eat with chips and peas, but as it is only he and his daughter who eat them, he will be making the ones he caught yesterday into a casserole.
