Romy, 6, finds her dad’s Mohawk haircut hilarious
TOM MCGAHY’S new Mohawk haircut has gone down well with daughter Romy, who has been receiving life-saving treatment at a Southampton hospital for the past 14 months.
He had aimed to raise £500 for the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation, which has supported the McGahy family during their time there.
But he smashed that target, and as of Saturday had raised more than £2,100.
The public were able to vote for Mr McGahy’s new haircut, going radical after more than 20 years of shoulder-length brown hair.
The Mohawk won and the haircut on Friday afternoon took almost five hours.
Jack Rabbits Barbers in Southampton did the colour and cut free of charge and is planning to donate the cost of the haircut to Mr McGahy’s fundraiser.
‘Romy found the Mohawk hilarious when she first saw it and Zephyr [Romy’s sister] wasn’t as scared as I thought she would be,’ Mr McGahy said.
‘She copied Romy and had a bit of a laugh. Thank you to everybody who donated. I’ll be getting used to my new haircut now.’
The McGahy family have been living in Isaac’s Pad – one of the PPBF’s Southampton-based flats right next to the city’s hospital.
Funds raised will go towards safeguarding the future of both Aggie’s Burrow and Isaac’s Pad. Last year, the flats were occupied for more than 700 nights, proving just how vital they are for local families with premature babies or poorly little ones.
Mr McGahy is sending his hair to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for young people who have lost their hair due to medical treatment.
Romy’s grandparents, Nesta and Gordon Crabb, are in Guernsey, but have seen pictures of their son-in-law’s new haircut.
‘It was a shock,’ Mrs Crabb said. ‘But it’s definitely good fun.’
