Some of the library’s volumes tell the story of when Valentine’s Day first become associated with romance.

The first mention appears to come from the French court in the 15th century, when Charles VI described lavish festivities to mark the occasion.

The oldest English valentines appeared 77 years later, in letters written by Margery Brews to her fiance John Paston who she described as her ‘right well beloved valentine’.
