Alderney Police and the States of Alderney launched the scheme at the island’s police station yesterday, providing the opportunity for anyone to hand over any weapons without being prosecuted for unlawful possession.

The surrender also allows those with expired certificates to apply for renewal, while not having to hand in their weapons, unless the application is rejected.

‘So far we’ve had a positive response from the community,’ said an Alderney Police spokesman.

'We’ve had a number of things handed in.’

On the scheme’s first day, weapons including a .22 rifle, a 12 bore shotgun, a handful of swords and a fishing spear were collected, as well as the flail.

A variety of ammunition was also handed in and destruction notices are being put together for all of the non-firearms.

Anyone handing in a firearm should make sure it is unloaded and carry it in a suitable container separate from the ammunition.

The scheme is running until the end of February, when the police will continue to investigate illegally held dangerous weaponry.

Accepted items include imitation firearms, any knives or bladed articles, flare guns and crossbows.

Those looking to renew expired certificates must fill in a form, available at www.alderney.gov.gg

Anyone unable to take their item to the police should call Sergeant James Taylor on 01481 222222 to make arrangements for it to be collected.
