This picture supplied by Guernsey Police shows people who went to the aid of a pedestrian who was pinned underneath a car at the Bridge. They continued to assist when the emergency services arrived on scene.

They rolled the Toyota Aygo onto its side to free the young woman, who was taken to hospital by ambulance with injuries which were reported not to be life-threatening.

Passers-by watched in horror as the woman crossing the road on the Bridge ended up under the car.

About six people rushed to the car, lifted it, then moved it onto its side to free the woman, while waiting for the emergency services.

Andy Carre, of AJ Electrical, and a colleague were sat in their work van when they heard a woman scream.

They saw the incident happen in the van’s mirrors, with the woman becoming trapped between the wheels, and rushed to help lift the car as they waited for the ambulance.

‘We were the first ones there, but then some lads ran over to help us lift it,’ said Mr Carre.

‘We’re doing all right, the main thing is that the young lady is OK.’

The helpers continued to assist with the incident even after police attended.

The car was on its side as the emergency services arrived, and firefighters secured it in that position for it to be examined by police officers.

‘We were called to an RTC with a person pinned underneath the vehicle,’ said the Fire & Rescue Service incident commander.

‘We arrived with five firefighters, a water tender and a rescue tender which contains all of our cutting equipment.

‘When we arrived, the car was on its side where it had been rolled over by members of the public in order to get the pedestrian out.’

Firefighters flipped the car back onto four wheels and it was removed by a recovery vehicle.

The road was completely blocked from the roundabout at Vale Avenue to the filter at the junction of Nocq Road.

Until Civil Protection officers arrived on scene to manage the traffic, it was at a standstill in both directions with no one able to access the parking spaces by the shops.

Vehicles were diverted through the shop-side of the area, before the Bridge reopened at about 1pm.
