Two events in Town for Liberation Day

TWO events will be held in Town this Liberation Day, but the main focus will remain on the parishes, Education, Sport & Culture has announced.

A shortened cavalcade will also be held, which will not travel past the parish events in St Martin’s, St Saviour’s or St Andrew’s.

There will be a 1940s-themed concert on the Crown Pier between 5pm and 9pm, with food and drink available, followed by the traditional fireworks display.

There will also be music and entertainment at Castle Cornet, with free admission from 11am to 4pm.

ESC president Andrea Dudley-Owen said parishes were still the focus of the day.

‘The committee continues to believe that parish-based activities help take Liberation Day to the community across the island, rather than having a focus on Town, and we continue to be keen to support the parishes with their efforts in this regard,’ she said.

‘Having said that, it’s clear that for some islanders ensuring the Town seafront is bustling on Liberation Day is important to them and the committee has responded to that by organising two additional centrepiece events along the seafront. It means that Liberation Day really will offer something for everyone.’

The cavalcade will start from the Imperial Hotel at 1pm, and travel up the west coast, and then go through the Bridge and down the east coast. It would then be on static display in Town between 3pm and 5pm.

‘While the route change will be disappointing for some, we understand the impact of last year’s route on some of these very old vehicles, so it is sensible to make changes to ensure their longevity,’ said Deputy Dudley-Owen.

The cavalcade committee includes representatives from the Guernsey Military Vehicle Group, Guernsey Old Car Club and the Vintage and Classic Tractor Club.

Feedback from cavalcade drivers was that last year’s route, which included some tight turns and steep hills, caused challenges for some of the vintage vehicles.

This meant that some broke down and had to drop out before the end.

It was this that led to the revised route being drawn up.
