Haskins quits E&I to focus on role at ESC
ENVIRONMENT & Infrastructure vice-president Sam Haskins has tendered his resignation from the committee, saying that he wants to give his full attention to Education, Sport & Culture.
The move follows his appointment as ESC’s vice-president in January.
He has now submitted his letter of resignation to the Bailiff, but will remain a member of E&I until this is formally accepted by the States.
Deputy Haskins said his new role at ESC has brought with it additional responsibilities such as chairing interim governing boards which was an intensive time commitment.
‘This is the committee with the second-largest budget of all the States committees. The three areas of education, sport and culture are all very wide-reaching, and hugely important to Guernsey and our future,’ he said.
The future of the island’s children and educational stability was of paramount importance to him, he said, and he was looking forward to focusing his efforts on making a positive difference.
He had been vice-president at E&I for more than two years, and said he had always given the committee and his colleagues his fullest attention and been keenly interested in trying to further its work.
‘I have offered well-researched, thoughtful and thorough observations and when necessary, offered robust challenge. It is therefore with regret that I have taken the decision to resign from E&I in order to give ESC my full attention.’
He thanked E&I president Lindsay de Sausmarez and his fellow members and hoped his replacement would ‘offer the same level of respectful, internal scrutiny’.
Deputy de Sausmarez said Deputy Haskins had been ‘a diligent and thoughtful vice-president’, bringing knowledge, experience, a keen eye for detail and sharp analytical skills to the committee.
She thanked him for his contribution, in particular for his role on the Electricity Strategy Steering Group.
‘Sam has made a positive contribution to the range of perspectives on the committee and therefore the strength of the decision-making,’ she said.
‘We all wish him well in his new role as vice-president of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture.’
