Rotary Club funds medical services to help Ukraine
MORE than £45,000 has been raised by the Rotary Club of Guernsey in the past year to assist with humanitarian efforts caused by the war in Ukraine.
The funds raised have mostly gone towards supporting the International Rotary Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals, which provides medical services and supplies to those impacted by the war, including treating those who have suffered injuries.
Simon Wood, chairman of the Rotary Club’s International Committee, said that it had received considerable support from local companies and the Chamber of Commerce.
‘We’ve also done lots of public collections and have been very active on social media to increase awareness,’ he added.
Mr Wood also said that a single donation of £10,000 had been put towards the construction of one of a number of temporary, modular houses for families in the Ukrainian village of Moshchun, which is northwest of Kyiv.
Moshchun saw heavy fighting in the early days of the war, with about 80% of the village destroyed.
Following Moshchun’s liberation, the Ukrainian branch of Rotary International launched a worldwide appeal to rebuild the village.
‘So many millions have suffered over the last 12 months, and we’re proud to have played a part in helping those people and contributing to Rotary’s overall response to the war,’ Mr Wood said.
