two events to mark World Book Day.

On Thursday itself, a giveaway will take place at Bright Beginnings Community Centre in St Sampson’s, where parents, care-givers and children attending the centre will be invited to

choose a book to take home and keep.

Additionally, the Guille-Alles Library will be hosting the ‘Big Giveaway’ between 10am and noon on Saturday morning, with visitors able to choose a book to take home with them. Soroptimists Guernsey members will be on hand to assist those unsure of what to read.

Executive officer Shirley Marsh said that World Book Day welcomed children into the world of books by helping them to become book owners.

‘We will have short stories for younger children aged five to seven available, and chapter books for those who are a bit older, as well as information and picture books,’ she said, adding

that most of the books being given away were second-hand.

Mrs Marsh also said that each book in the giveaway will have a Soroptimist International sticker on it, with an accompanying quote from acclaimed children’s author Dr Seuss – ‘the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that

you learn, the more places you will go’.

‘We’ve held a book giveaway twice before for World Book Day, but this is the first time since before Covid,’ Mrs Marsh said, adding that she thought World Book Day was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate a love of books and reading.
