The busy session saw chamber music, choirs and junior musical hits during the late afternoon.

But it started with the pop song classes.

The first class was the under 15 duo, trio and quartets.

Friends Charlie Elston, 14, and Eliza Webster, 15, performed Bad Habit by Ben Platt.

Charlie said they had chosen the song because they liked the energy. And even after lots of practice, she said they still liked the song.

‘It has a meaning behind it, about friendship,’ she said.

Friends Freya Tardif, 16, and Poppy Cochrane, 17, were competing together in the duo, trio and quartet under 18 pop song class.

Freya has been taking part in the Eisteddfod since she was six years old.

‘I just love being on the stage,’ she said.

The pair performed Ike and Tina Turner’s River Deep, Mountain High.

‘It is good fun to perform pop songs,’ she said.

‘I watched this song on Glee and it is a powerful song.’

Singing teacher Jo Martel helped coach some of the entrants. With the students picking their own songs, she has to learn how to play them. But she said she enjoyed it.

The music classes continue until Saturday.
