The roles support the Lt-Governor in events, including presentations of awards at Government House, the King’s Birthday Reception, Liberation Day Parade and the annual service of Remembrance.

They are also able to help the Lt-Governor better understand the Bailiwick’s young population and voice their opinions on the future of our islands.

‘Being a Lt-Governor’s cadet is a great honour and something I will be proud of for the rest of my life,’ said current cadet Henry Whittaker.

‘Furthermore, to have partaken in the activities I have this year, specifically carrying the Union Standard for the King’s proclamation, is something I would never have imagined myself doing.

‘I am looking forward to everything else to come this year with great anticipation and excitement.’

To help those interested better understand the role of the cadets, Government House is hosting an evening on Wednesday 29 March to organisations and charities who work with young people.

The current cohort will also be on hand to speak on the experiences and opportunities they have had as part of this project.

Up to five young people are chosen to be cadets through a recommendation, application and interview process.

Potential cadets for this year must be aged 15-18 at the beginning of September 2023, be available within the island for 12 months from September and have a written recommendation from a nominating person from any organisation that works with young people.

Recommendations should indicate how the applicant is a good all-rounder at giving service to their organisation and community, has leadership qualities and good interpersonal skills.

The interviewing process for the next group of cadets, supported by the Youth Commission, will begin in late June ready for an investiture evening presentation at the beginning of September.
