Skips trial may not be only green waste site solution
SKIPS are being trialled at the Chouet green waste site.
Previously islanders would empty their grass cuttings onto the ground of the quarry, with diggers used to pile it up.
But a new stone quarry looks set to be opened at the site.
The new green waste location will be smaller in size and require some changes for users to be able to access the site smoothly and drop-off safely.
‘One of the changes we are looking at is the introduction of low-sided skips that users can empty their garden waste into, instead of leaving it on the ground,’ said Guernsey Waste operations manager Sarah Robinson.
‘The sides are around a metre high, so it is not dissimilar to the height one has to lift bags to get them in and out of a vehicle.’
This will enable material to be transferred more easily from the drop-off point to the processing area.
Skips have been put at the site for a trial period so any issues that arise can be fixed.
‘We will be collecting any feedback from site users, and assess how the options work in practice to help inform the final plans.
'We are also looking at other options, so we may end up having a combination of solutions,’ said Ms Robinson.
‘However whatever measures we put in place will ultimately be for the convenience and safety of site users.’
Islanders are also encouraged to compost as much of their garden waste as possible with Guernsey Waste providing subsidised home-composting kits through local garden centres.
These cost £10.
‘They save all the time and hassle of having to load up all the material in your car and bring down to the site,’ said Ms Robinson.
A large amount of kitchen waste can also be composted, ending up in a natural fertiliser which is rich in nutrients.
