End of April deadline for Vale boatowners to check moorings

VALE boat owners who are registered to use the Grande Havre and Bordeaux areas have been reminded to get their moorings in shipshape for the season, with the deadline to do so at the end of this month.

All owners with registered moorings at Rousse, Les Amarreurs and Chouet are required to have their mooring number clearly painted on the marker buoy and mooring ropes cleaned no later than 30 April.

All owners in the Bordeaux moorings area are required to have their allocation number clearly painted on the mooring bobber and on the ‘in and out’ haulers by the same date.

Moorings not marked will be deemed as being abandoned and will be re-allocated by the relevant committee. Moorings are also not transferable without a committee’s permission.

Rousse committee special constable Rodney Norman expected there to be about 100 moorings in Rousse for the coming season.

‘We make sure that there is a certain amount of space between each mooring because of the differences in draught sizes for some of the boats. I think the biggest boat we’ve got is about 25ft,’ he said.

Mr Norman added that the Rousse committee had not had too much trouble with people forgetting to look after their moorings in the past, with only one or two gentle reminders usually sent out.

Bordeaux committee special constable Michael Scrimshaw said that it was crucial for boat owners to check their moorings regularly, with about 100 also expected at Bordeaux.

‘Previously I’ve known of a few people who have neglected their boats and they have ended up upside down and washed up on the shore. We get more boats in the bay each year, so making sure ropes are clean and free of seaweed is really important.’
