The fundraising was split between the islands, with Guernsey getting £2,940 of the total, and Jersey £3,060.

Nearly 1,200 £2.50 vouchers were sold, having been launched last month, with the Co-op matching the donations.

Islanders were able to purchase the vouchers in store and simply had to add them to their shop to activate the donation.

‘All of us at the Co-op would like to thank the kindness and generosity shown by our customers across both Jersey and Guernsey stores in helping us raise these donations,’ said Carl Winn, head of community and sustainability at the Co-op.

‘Our local community is at the heart of everything that we do, and we are proud to be able to match the amount raised to help us to donate such a generous amount to lots of amazing causes who are all working hard to make a difference.’

A dozen food banks and charities will receive part of the money, including Bright Beginnings, Wigwam, Salvation Army, Guernsey Welfare Service, Women’s Refuge and Age Concern.

Mr Winn said the scheme was very successful and has spurred further charity action at the business.

Due to the positive feedback, Co-op is currently working on making the ability to donate to a food bank a permanent feature across its stores in the coming weeks.

This will mean that as well as having the food donation boxes in five stores, customers will also be able to donate £1, or multiples of £1, by just adding it to their shopping at the checkout.

The final details of this initiative is going to be announced in the near future.
