Firefighters washed more than 150 cars on Saturday 1 April at the Salerie Corner car park to mark the Fire Fighters Charity’s 80th anniversary, which is who the funds were raised for.

The charity supports the health and wellbeing of serving and retired fire and rescue service personnel, their dependants and other eligible members of the UK fire services community, throughout their lives, helping them to live happier and healthier.

The Fire Fighters Charity’s service co-ordinator for Guernsey, Alex Clark, said the event went down extremely well with islanders.

‘The annual car wash is always very popular and we are very fortunate to have such strong support from our community. 158 cars were washed in total and we even had to turn some cars away as we ran out of time – although many of those still made a donation,’ he said.

Mr Clark added that the charity has made strides recently.

‘One positive to come out of the Covid pandemic for us has been the digitalisation of many of the charity’s services,’ he said.

‘This has allowed us to access the charity’s support more than previously, with one example being through a series of health and wellbeing workshops which are currently being delivered to staff.’

The Fire Fighters Charity relies almost entirely on donations to fund its work and anyone wishing to donate can do so at firefighterscharity.org.uk/donate.
