Floral Design Guernsey celebrated its new logo, name and Facebook page with a launch party last month at its new venue of the Professor Shaw Community Centre.

The event sold out and saw a mixture of 80 regulars and guests come together for a demonstration by renowned Irish florist John Paul, who has more than 25 years of experience.

Group founder Ann Wragg was delighted at how the event turned out.

‘It was fantastic, a wonderful evening with a party atmosphere and a lot of new faces.

‘He was brilliant, telling stories of landscapes through his striking designs and muted tones,’ she said.

Unusual flowers including purple anthuriums were used for his demonstration, titled Tales from the Emerald Isle.

It was relative newcomer Rachel Bearder’s second time at a flower demonstration after she had heard about it through the new Facebook page.

She said it had opened her eyes to what flower arranging can offer.

‘You wouldn’t have found me at something like that two years ago, but I loved it, it was really interesting.

‘The storytelling with the flowers was amazing, I’m going to the next one with my mum,’ said Mrs Bearder.

It marks the start of a series of demonstrations that will be put on by Floral Design Guernsey, aimed to suit all tastes.

The next event took place yesterday, featuring Chelsea Flower Show medallist Sharon Dower.

‘We want people to know that flower arranging isn’t what it used to be, so we’re trying to bring over people who do different things with different styles,’ said Mrs Wragg.

‘There’s going to be something for everyone.’

The group is also looking to bring international designers from countries such as Holland to further expand its horizons.
