A GROUP of staff at The Guernsey Institute have teamed up after realising they were all Island Games volunteers.

10 members of staff will be volunteering at the Guernsey Games this summer and another is competing in the island’s basketball team.

‘I am volunteering for the first time, and I discovered that a number of other people from The Guernsey Institute were also doing it,’ said executive principal Jacki Hughes.

‘We thought it would be a really good way of recognising the sort of people who work for the organisation, who care about the community, and are interested in island life.

‘There are so many volunteers across the island but we are really pleased to play our part.’

Ms Hughes will be an attache for the Jersey team.

Some of her colleagues will be marshalling.

There are also students who will be either volunteering or competing and she hopes they will join in the Games camaraderie which is building within the Institute.

‘Now that we know who we all are, we can help and support each other in our different roles,’ she said.

‘At the last training session we all kept bumping into each other.

‘We can describe the training and the events of the Island Games to other staff and students as well, which brings it all into the organisation.’

The Guernsey Institute’s Kathy Stuart will be involved in her 13th Island Games.

‘I started off as a badminton player and won a silver medal in the ladies, as well as some team medals,’ she said.

‘I did several years as badminton manager, three Games as part of the Guernsey Island Games Association, and then this year I am part of the sports management team, and my role is to look after badminton, table tennis and tennis.

‘It will be a marvellous Island Games.

'All of the Games are fabulous in their own way and I am sure that this will be up to the task.’

Her plan for the next Games after Guernsey – in Orkney in 2025 – is to be a spectator. She said that was the only role she had not played before.
