The beach clean on Saturday was organised by the Clean Earth Trust – a charity that organises weekly beach cleans in the Bailiwick.

About 16 people turned out for the event, which started in bright sunshine, before some afternoon showers blew in.

Among the beach cleaners were the Miller Family – father Geoff and children Charlotte and Alice, both 10, and Anthony, 7.

Mr Miller said he heard about the event on social media and the children had been keen to do something.

‘We had been watching [BBC programme] Wild Isles and the girls wanted to do something to help,’ said Mr Miller.

‘We haven’t found a huge amount of big items, but there are lots of little bits of plastic and some bits of wood.’

Alice said everyone needed to do something, before it was too late.

‘We want to do our bit.’

In total the volunteers collected 10.9 kilos of rubbish. The included 182 pieces of plastic, 81 cigarette butts and 60 nurdles – small pieces of plastic.

The lentil-sized pieces of plastic can cause big problems.

Not only are they hard to collect, but they disrupt eco systems, with animals mistaking them for food.

Olivia Bennett from the Clean Earth Trust said beach cleaners had been seeing lots of nurdles washing up on local shores after a spill of Brittany earlier this year.

She added that all local beaches faced problems with beach litter, but L’Eree was particularly bad for washed-up rubbish, which is why it was picked for the Earth Day clean-up.

Earth Day is a worldwide event to demonstrate support for environmental protection and has been held annually since 1970.

  • The next CET beach clean is being held at Albecq between 9am and 11am on Sunday.
