Coronation: ‘Guernsey people not put off by inclement weather’
GREY skies could not dampen the enthusiasm at the KGV as Guernsey welcomed the coronation of a new King.
The day’s main event locally was a live screening of the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, shown outdoors on a big screen.
More than 300 people huddled beneath rain-laden clouds to watch events unfold and join in the family-themed fun.
Organiser Nikki Symons said that, considering the weather, she was pleased with the turnout.
‘It’s lovely to see so many young children here watching the event, knowing they are going to remember it all their lives,’ she said.
‘This was an opportunity for everyone to come together come rain or shine. As Guernsey people, we are always prepared for a bit of inclement weather.’
Elaine and Steve Edwards were two of the crowd who had ignored the threat of showers to see the new King’s big moment.
And both were sure that the new King would prove to be an effective and 21st century monarch.
‘He will be his own King. He will reach out to all generations and all communities,’ said Mrs Edwards.
‘You can see that from how he has involved everyone, from all faiths and backgrounds, in the coronation itself.’
Rosy Brown and Jimmy Evans were two of the few people present representing the islands 20-somethings. Miss Brown said she was slightly conflicted about watching the Coronation.
‘I love the pageantry and heritage, and it’s something I want to be part of. But I do feel equivocal about supporting a constitutional monarchy that is fundamentally undemocratic.’
Mr Evans agreed.
‘Like most of my generation I feel quite ambiguous towards the monarchy. But these occasions don’t come along very often, so it would be odd not to take some part in it.’
