Four companies were at the awards, each made up of between three and 15 students in Year 12, who were chosen as finalists from an overall field of eight at a Dragons’ Den-style event.

Young Enterprise area board member Tim Wainwright said that each team had been asked to set up and operate its own company, including electing a management board, raising share capital and designing, making, marketing and selling a product or service.

‘All companies were also required to write a report and periodically present this to the area board in order for their progress to be monitored and ultimately to help determine the prize winners for each award category,’ he said.

Forget-Me-Not-Cards was named company of the year. It made environmentally-friendly greetings cards by incorporating a seed patch onto each of its cards.

‘The seeds they were using were local and they sold a lot of their cards during late-night shopping before Christmas,’ said Mr Wainwright.

‘It was an excellent idea and very original. We liked the sustainable aspect.’

Other companies which made it to the final included Coaches4U, which designed a website for tutors to promote their services to customers looking for specialist expertise, customised mug print company Get Mugged, and Lamair Hats, which designed swimming hats.

‘It was a celebration of all the students’ successes really, as each team excelled.

‘One thing that really struck me was the amount of work they put in and how seriously they took it, despite all of the other studying they are doing in school at the moment.

‘Business in Guernsey is definitely in good hands for the future.’
