Al fresco Thai dining set for Crown Pier in the summer

THAI dining outdoors could be coming to the north arm of the Crown Pier, if planning permission is granted.

Atan Limited is hoping to create an al fresco summer dining area at the Round Top Stores.

‘Our clients currently run Atan, which provides a successful and highly regarded takeaway and events catering business, specialising in Thai cuisine,’ said Debbie Joyce, from Turnstone Architecture, in the planning application

‘They wish to provide a seasonal dining experience at the Round Top Stores.’

It is proposed that the business would operate from April to September between 7am and 11pm, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

‘Tables and chairs will be arranged on the lower quayside, ensuring there is a metre access to the water along the edge of the quay,’ Ms Joyce said.

‘Furniture will be portable and put away within the large store when the business is closed.’

The food would be provided from a container-style catering unit, but four parking spaces at the end of the pier would be lost if the plans are approved.

‘Our client would like to apply for change of use of the stores, which are currently used as fisherman’s stores, and for some limited development of the site, which will comprise of demountable fixtures such as a serving counter and bar within a portable container unit,’ Ms Joyce said.

‘A portable WC will be provided, which will provide wheelchair-accessible facilities.

‘This will complement the public WC facilities available approximately 120m away.’

There are no services near the site.

‘Therefore water and waste water will be provided and removed on a daily basis,’ Ms Joyce said.

‘Electricity will be provided by a portable generator. The generator, WC and waste storage will be located within an open air enclosure and this will be formed using vertical black, charred larch cladding so that the service area is screened from view from all angles.

‘Black charred larch will be used as a cladding material on the catering unit so that there is continuity across the complete installation.’

The generator would not be used outside the operating hours.

It is planned there will be flags and banners during the restaurant’s opening hours, but an application for this will be submitted separately.

The site is part of the wider Seafront Enhancement Area programme for St Peter Port, and was one of six sites identified in 2018 as having opportunities for development.

Ormer shell sculpture could go in same area

Organisers of an ormer shell sculpture confirmed discussions are still taking place with Guernsey Harbours over the artwork.

Planning permission was granted in 2021 for the four metre-high bronze statue and organisers hope the sculpture could be in place by the end of the year.

The application for the restaurant would not impact the sculpture, which would be on the top of the Round Top Stores.
