Mr James retired as vice-principal of Elizabeth College last year after four decades at the school. He still runs its foundation bursary scheme.

In his new role, he will lead efforts to raise funds towards Grow’s operating costs of about £660,000 a year.

‘I see every week the benefits that Grow brings to its team as my stepson has attended for several years,’ said Mr James.

‘I now have time to give something back in support of the great provision that is available through Grow.

‘I think, too, that my role with foundation bursaries at Elizabeth College reflects my desire to support young people who do not have the same opportunities as others.’

About one-third of Grow’s costs are met by the States. Another £140,000 a year is raised through plant and product sales and garden maintenance contracts. Remaining costs are funded from public support, including corporate grants and fundraising events. The charity is now looking to fill other roles on its fundraising arm, including treasurer and secretary, as well as event co-ordinators and social media managers.

‘We aim to provide a range of new fundraising activities, many of them utilising the exciting new facilities on the redeveloped Grow site,’ said Mr James.

‘These roles will not be arduous. Rather a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity to support an extremely worthwhile charity.

‘We are also keen to enrol people to join our team of volunteers who help at these events.’

Grow chairman Mark Dunster welcomed Mr James.

‘Rick is well known throughout the community and brings a wealth of experience into the position,’ he said.
