On Saturday the GSPCA received a call claiming that a car was repeatedly driving up La Charotterie – one of the main roads out of St Peter Port, which goes past Frossard House.

When GSPCA volunteers reached the scene the car was gone, but they recovered two dead herring gulls from the road, along with a number of slices of bread.

‘It’s horrible to think that someone may be doing this on purpose,’ said GSPCA manager Steve Byrne.

‘I’d like to think it was somehow accidental.’

A white car, which Mr Byrne said was possibly a Fiat,

was seen in the area around noon. The driver is unknown.

‘Leaving large food items out like that will obviously soon attract a few birds, who will call in the flock,' he said.

‘Targeting them with a car breaks animal welfare law and is a criminal matter, as someone is intentionally trying to inflict suffering on an animal.

'We are talking to the authorities to see if anything comes to light.’

He asked witnesses or anybody with information to please call the Animal Shelter on 257261, or email admin@gspca.org.gg.

‘We are always here for any welfare concern and if any member of the public ever has a worry, we would ask them to please get in touch,’ he said.

‘Thankfully these incidents are rare and we haven’t had any instances like this in recent years.’
