Pink Ladies walk into sunset for good cause
LADIES turned Guernsey’s north-west coast into a ribbon of pink on Saturday evening at the ninth biennial sunset walk.
About 1,000 Pink Ladies’ walkers gathered at Grandes Rocques just before 6pm for a warm-up before setting off northwards on the 10.5-mile course.
They were joined by more walkers at Bordeaux, who took on a shorter course of 3.5 miles, before they all headed into Town for a pink party in Market Square.
Pink Ladies’ chairwoman Sharon Tracey said the most important aspect of the walk was promoting awareness about the symptoms of breast cancer. It also raised funds for patients.
‘The money is a bonus and doesn’t matter as much. I’m incredibly thankful for the support shown by everyone. I’m amazed at the number of people who have got dressed up for this, especially those in pig costumes,’ she said.
Tracey Cordingley, one of the walkers who decided to don a large pig outfit, said the costume proved to be an attraction and tempted more supporters into donating money.
‘My bucket is almost full, so many people have stopped to compliment the outfit and to donate,’ she said.
She set herself a pre-walk target of completing the whole route in the costume.
‘It’s boiling, but it will be worth it. I did the walk in a sumo suit two years ago, so I’m getting used to it.’
Abigail La Joie was taking part in the walk with her friend Sophie Guevelou.
‘Cancer impacts so many people. To be able to support the Pink Ladies while having a good laugh on the walk is great, although I think I’ll regret it in the morning,’ she said.
Kelly Dennis was taking part in her seventh walk and was pleased the weather was warm and sunny, in contrast to the previous walk two years ago.
‘There was torrential rain and it didn’t let up the whole walk. I’m glad it’s nicer this time,’ she said.
Ivana Williams was walking for friends affected by cancer.
‘It’s for such a good cause and the distance will be well worth it,’ she said.
