Former Army and Navy shop to be a home
THE former Army and Navy Stores at Albecq can be converted into a home, after planning permission was granted.
The small structure on Retot Lane stands alongside Albecq Farm, but unlike the farm, it is not listed.
It had been home to the Army and Navy Stores for many years, but that ended about 10 years ago.
It was used by a second-hand storage and salvage company for a short period, which ended in 2020.
The property is of traditional granite construction but planning officers said it was of 'little architectural merit'.
However they were concerned about whether the building could be classed as redundant, as it had only been vacant for three years.
The project agent pointed out that it could not be used for its last known use any longer.
It has no sanitary facilities, such as running water, and was a single retail unit in a residential area.
The planners said that looking at a number of factors, they decided it was inappropriate to retain the site for retail.
Under the plans the footprint of the building would remain the same, as it will be converted into a one-bed dwelling.
