Ofsted inspectors find La Mare Primary good across the board

LA MARE de Carteret Primary School has continued the run of positive Ofsted reports about Guernsey’s primary schools.

The school scored good across all five areas in its most recent inspection.

The two-form entry school has 274 pupils aged between four and 11.

The inspectors noted that pupils loved learning and the school had a calm environment.

‘Leaders and staff are ambitious for all pupils,’ the report states.

‘They place pupils at the centre of all decisions they make. The school’s curriculum inspires and prepares pupils well for the next stage in their education.’

Head teacher Alison Elliott said the school was delighted that the report recognised the school’s strengths.

‘As a school, we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with parents and carers in order to make the improvements necessary to ensure all our children have the best possible start and are able to achieve their full potential,’ she said.

The inspectors also praised the school for its inclusive environment, how pupils take on responsibility, the nurturing of pupils’ reading and the development of life skills.

They also highlighted some areas where improvements could be made.

One involved teachers not being as secure in some subject areas as was needed, which resulted in them struggling to help pupils with gaps in their knowledge.

The inspectors also advised that SEND students should be given smaller, more achievable targets, as it would help them know where to study next.

Education, Sport & Culture president Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen congratulated the staff and children on the results.

Ofsted inspections started in Guernsey in March 2022, and so far from the primary sector, Vale, St Martin’s, La Houguette and Notre Dame have been inspected, each with judgments for each of five areas.

Of the 20 results achieved across the four schools, 19 have been good or excellent.

Director of education Nick Hynes welcomed the latest report.

‘We have had several schools now achieve good ratings in each of the five categories and I really want to emphasise how difficult that is,’ he said.

‘Alison, her team and the whole school community can be incredibly proud of this inspection report, which clearly shows that children are getting a good quality of education, in a kind and nurturing environment.’
